There is a growing trend towards New Zealand companies providing their staff with personal safety training as part of their Corporate Wellness Programs or in response to direct concerns by staff in regard to workplace safety.
In addition to the obvious benefits to staff of improving their personal safety skills, Protect courses also provide a great opportunity for team building and boosting workplace morale. Courses are taught in a fun and enjoyable way with lots of opportunity for interaction and discussion whilst providing valuable safety skills.
We can tailor courses specifically for individual client needs and can deliver courses as a ‘one off’ stand-alone event or as a series. Courses can be delivered anywhere in New Zealand.
Courses that we provide to companies are: Self Defence/Personal Protection courses, Conflict Resolution Courses, Armed Robbery Procedure, Keynote Speaking, and other specialist information courses including safety procedures for dealing with employee termination.

Below is a list of some of the most Frequently Asked Questions regarding our courses for companies and organisations. For any other questions please contact us to discuss.
Q. What is covered in the course(s)?
A. A basic breakdown of our most popular corporate courses are as follows:
Self Defence/Personal Protection Course:
The 4 hour course (courses can be from 2 hours to a full day) includes:
- - Understanding the psychology of violence
- - The legal aspects to defending yourself and/or others
- - Awareness and Avoidance strategies
- - De-escalation and verbal diffusion strategies and tactics
- - Practical and highly effective physical defence strategies
- - Interactive drills, exercises and discussions throughout and attendees have the opportunity to ask any questions they have throughout the day.
- - We are teaching a serious subject but ensure that it is done in an enjoyable and fun way!
Conflict Resolution Course:
- The initial approach: Building rapport and ‘lowering the defences’ of the client.
- Understanding ‘The Gap’: How the individual currently deals with conflict situations, the ideal outcome and how to bridge the gap between the two points.
- Dealing with abusive situations: Diffusing and De-escalating abusive and/or verbally aggressive situations.
- Objections: Realistic and easy remembered framework for handling objections and the key words to ensure the desired outcome.
- The realities of Win/Win outcomes and the keys to making this work in reality.
- ‘Forced Teaming’: Creating the perception of a shared problem maximising the chances of ‘buy-in’ from the client.
- Understanding body language for optimal communication and strategic positioning in conflict situations.
- Understanding the true (perceived) issues of the client: Drawing out information and getting to the bottom of the real issues so they can be solved.
- Knowing when it’s time to go: When resolution is not going to be met immediately and there is perceived threat to the team member’s safety. How to strategically disengage and the next steps from there.
- Practicing the skills framework under pressure (simulated scenarios) to create realistic experiences which aid retention and ‘automatic implementation’. (This is voluntary for attendees)
Keynote Speaking
Phil Thompson can deliver keynote talks to your team meeting or conference anywhere in New Zealand. Contact us for more details.
Q. Is the self defence course based on martial arts?
A. No, not at all. Contrary to popular belief, Martial Arts and Self Defence are generally two very separate animals. Protect is a reality based self defence ‘system’ which is based on real world issues and situations. Our only concern is for our attendees personal safety and ensuring they are prepared to recognise, avoid, diffuse, or (if necessary) physically defend themselves against dangerous situations.
Q. Where are the courses held and what are the timeframes?
A. We will come to your company or a venue that you have available to conduct the courses so that no travelling is required for your team. Depending on the duration of the course you have booked we can either start first thing in the morning and be finished by lunchtime, or start after lunch time and be finished by 5pm. We can also do evening courses if that suits you best, just let us know what is required.
Q. How much space is required?
A. It depends on the number of attendees and which course we are conducting. For a self defence course for up to 20 people, a ‘normal size’ meeting room (which can have chairs and tables cleared to the sides) or cafeteria is fine. For a Conflict Resolution course we just require a normal meeting/training room as attendees will be seated for most of the course. We are happy to assess the available space to ensure that it is sufficient prior to the course and make recommendations if it is not.
Q. What other equipment is required?
A. For the self defence courses, no special equipment is required. A carpeted floor is generally preferred but not absolutely necessary. If chairs are available that is also great but not necessary. For the Conflict Resolution course or other specialist courses (including keynote speaking) we will discuss specific requirements with you at the time of booking.
Q. What is the minimum and maximum numbers of attendees?
A. There is no minimum number of attendees. Maximum numbers will depend on which course is booked, the available venue, and the number of facilitators available. We have taught groups which range from a couple of people to several hundred people so we can generally make any requirement that you have work.
Q. Are there any age limits for attendees?
A. Depending on the course booked the minimum age is 15 years. There is no maximum age.
Q. Do Men and Women train together for the self defence courses?
A. It is up to you and the requirements you have for the course content. Most of the time we train men and women at the same time. If there is a specific focus for the course though (eg rape prevention safety for women) then we can do women specific and men specific courses.
Q. Do attendees have to be fit to attend the self defence course?
A. No, not at all. Self defence training is a life skill not a fitness or martial arts class.
Q. Do you have a health and safety plan?
A. Yes. We start every course with a health and safety briefing. Protect course facilitators hold current first aid certificates.
Q. How much do the courses cost?
A. It depends on which course you are booking, the duration of the course, where it is being held and a few other factors so let us know what you require and we will let you know what the investment will be. |
